Overview of the SBIRT Model: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment for Students Engaging in Substance Use
Monday March 31, 2025 10:30am - 11:20am CDT
I will be providing a brief overview of the SBIRT model. SBIRT is a comprehensive public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for students with substance use disorders as well as students who are at risk for developing those disorders.

It consists of three major components:

Screening: Assess the student for risky substance use behaviors using a standardized screening measure- the CRAFFT screening tool.

Brief Intervention: Engage a student showing signs of risky use in a short conversation about their use, using evidence-based motivational interviewing techniques to provide feedback and enhance motivation for change.

Referral to Treatment: For those identified as possibly dependent on a substance or needing additional services, offer information on how to access treatment.

Hear Me Out: Exploring Social Justice Through Student Storytelling and Podcasts
Monday March 31, 2025 1:55pm - 2:45pm CDT
Listen, hear me out: what if we give a student a microphone and let them tell a story? This workshop invites educators to explore the powerful role podcasting can play in fostering critical conversations about social justice among students. Podcasting provides a dynamic platform for students to share personal narratives, amplify underrepresented voices, and examine the societal challenges that shape their lives.

Following a year-long program exploring civil rights through the Civil Rights Scholars Program, five scholars came together on the inaugural Civil Rights Scholars Advisory Council within the Office of Student Protections and Title IX to dive deeper into social justice through the lenses of Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action. Using podcasting to guide their curiosity, the scholars are exploring both technology and the power of stories to educate, motivate, and mobilize others around issues important to them.

The council is ongoing this school year. They utilize SoundTrap to create their podcasts and this software will be mentioned in the presentation, but the content is not limited to only SoundTrap users. Successes, challenges, and guidance for bringing podcasting into a classroom/program will be shared.
